You bend the paper plate to fit under the tab.  Once the paper plate is under the tab, the paper plate will fit normally and be secured by the tabs.<br>Are these plate holders dishwasher safe?<br>T<br>hese are top rack dishwasher safe.  That means as long as they are not close to a heating element, they will be ok.  I always put the plastic items including Tupperware in the middle of the rack to keep them safe. Due to the various materials of the cups, plates, pots and pans, the temperature needed to dry the items needs to be high.  That is why almost all plastics such as Glad reusable, Tupperware, and these plate holders need to be away from the heating element that is used for heating your dishes.<br>Are these plate holders microwaveable safe?<br>A<br>s far as microwaveable safe: I tell everyone that they should test the plastic plate holders for set amount of time in their microwave starting with a low time of 20-30 seconds first.  The reason for that is that there are too many variables and power outputs of the microwaves.  Think of some of your Tupperware or glass and even ceramics how they become warm or even hot to the touch.<br>How sturdy are these plate holders?<br>T<br>hese plate holders are<br>NOT<br>like fine china.  This order is the heaviest three tab style that I offer and they're made right here in the U.S.A.  They are meant to add strength to your paper plates. I have more rigid black paper plate holders. Unfortunately, they do not have the tabs to keep the paper plate to the holder.  Past experience has showed that people would rather have a sturdy plate holder with the tabs. Without the tabs holding the paper plate to the holder, you are at Mother Nature's disposal.
