    Description

NAKAMICHI 680 CASSETTE DECK FULLY RESTORED. Condition is "Used". This highly desirable fully restored Nakamichi 680 cassette deck, S/N 4141, has had extensive service & restoration done, including on the transport: new capstan, mode, & counter belts, and idler tire, with arm alignment mod, long life counter tape sense bulb, clean & lubrication with proper lubricants, setting of all tape speeds, play & record calibration levels, meter alignment, and all head adjustments including tape guides, arm pivots, azimuth, height, tilt, thrust & stroke adjustments per the service manual done with original Nakamichi Gauges and Calibration tapes. The deck is calibrated for TDK D/AD, SA & MA tapes. The deck can be calibrated to other tapes on request. The operation of the deck is silent in use and switching modes.
W&F is measured actual as .05%RMS. Measured frequency response is 15-21kHz, better than +/-2dB @-20dB, in both playback & record, with lower than specified THD. RAMM works as designed.
Extensive upgrade replacements of all the 100uF & larger power supply capacitors, all pertinent orange propylene caps with WIMA FKP polypropylene caps, and many electrolytic capacitors in the play & record audio path, including all caps in the play to Dolby path.  All electrolytic capacitors installed are Nichicon audio grade caps, except in the power supply, where Nichicon VE, HE & PS caps are used. The standard 4066 cmos switches used for switching eq for EX, SX & ZX (Type I, II & IV) tapes have been upgraded with the high performance version of Fairchild HC4066.  These improvements are what I have found to be the most effective bang for the buck, short of a full all out capacitor replacement program.
Similar to its more expensive brother, the 680zx, the 680 is the same identical design in it has fixed bias for the 3 tape types at full & half speed, with front panel Dolby B sensitivity level adjustments via screwdriver (not included).  While the 680zx does the record head best azimuth automatically with engagement of the CAL switch, the 680 provides a user accessible front panel knob on the record head azimuth adjustment, and switches the meters to narrow range dual function mode that allows the user to manually adjust the azimuth with easy to see bars on the meters, and adjust the front panel levels to 0dB with a resolution of 1/3dB.
A copy of the User manual is included with purchase, and reading of it is highly recommended.
The cosmetics of the deck are as shown in the photos.  It is not a museum piece, but suffers no major deformities in the form of deep scratches or gauges.  Some anodizing has worn away on the edges, which has been touched up.  It presents itself quite well, as shown in the photos.  It shows better than normal cosmetic wear & tear for a cassette deck built in 1980, IMHO.  The "E" in "Eject" is worn off the front panel.
Shipping will be via UPS ground, and the deck will be expertly packed to survive any typical shipping mishap unscathed.  I have shipped many cassette decks, never have any arrived with an issue from inadequate packing.  Buy with confidence.
