SS Ralph Waldo Emerson Liberty Ship memorial first day cover postmarked at Fort Lauderdale, FL on February 9, 2018. Ship plus printed color portrait on cachet #9866 by Alvin Eckert #9964, USCS. Cover franked with a 3 cent Emerson stamp (Sc #861) and 50 cent flag stamp(FDOI).
Author Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was best known for his liberal philosophy of Transcendentalism. He is seen as a key figure in the development of America's intellectual culture.        He gave over 1,500 lectures and had an ability to inspire others. He also wrote essays and poems. He lived in Concord, MA and was linked to many writers in the Boston area. His 1836 essay
Nature
was well received.
He was educated at the Boston Latin School, and age 14 he went to Harvard College and graduated in 1821. In 1826 he moved to St. Augustine, Florida for health reasons. He married in 1829 but his wife died three years later. He married again in 1835 and the couple had five children. SS Ralph Waldo Emerson: this 441' Liberty Ship was named in his honor and built by Oregon Ship Building Corp. in Portland and delivered on May 2, 1942. The proud vessel transported vital supplies to US and Allied Forces overseas during WW II. She survived the war and was sold to be recycled into scrap metal in 1960.
