You bend the paper plate to fit under the tab.  Once the paper plate is under the tab, the paper plate will fit normally and be secured by the tabs.<br>Are these plate holders dishwasher safe?<br>T<br>hese are top rack dishwasher safe.  That means as long as they are not close to a heating element, they will be ok.  I always put the plastic items including Tupperware in the middle of the rack to keep them safe.
